Following weak box office performances for re-releases of "Monsters, Inc.," "Finding Nemo" and "Beauty and the Beast" in 3-D, Walt Disney Studios has canceled plans for a 3-D "The Little Mermaid" in September.

The underwater animated hit from 1989 was the fourth and final 3-D re-release for which Disney announced plans in late 2011 after "The Lion King" proved a surprise hit in the format, grossing nearly $100 million in the U.S. and Canada.

But "The Lion King" turned out to be an anomaly, as the three follow-ups grossed far less. "Beauty and the Beast" took in $47.6 million last January, "Finding Nemo" $40.7 million in September, and "Monsters, Inc." only $30.5 million since its Dec. 19 release.

The only reason why I'm posting this is because it reminds me all too much of the IMAX situation years ago. I know I'm biased, but I'd KILL to see Aladdin in 3-D. The film practically caters to the wonders of 3-D, but they always pull these re-releases before they get to us/consider Aladdin a possibility. I can't believe Disney keeps wasting its time with 'popular titles' instead of realizing which ones fit the format best/hasn't been over-saturated in the market (the just about monthly airing for the movie on ABC family doesn't count Laughing; No wonder no one wants to see these films. They keep playing on TV constantly. Why would parents take their children to see this when they can just watch it at home for free?). Plus, Belle's dress swooshing out in front of you can't possibly be more interesting than an escape from a fiery and erupting cave Laughing

How about giving the action film you haven't released on DVD in a while a shot, Disney? It worked for TLK.

Yeah, definitely getting some deja vu here. Laughing

They already got Aladdin all restored and ready for IMAX, so wouldn't a lot of the work needed to be done to get it ready for 3D already be done?
