That's pretty funny. Ya know, I wonder if I have any African blood in me. My dad once said, "Grandpa's side of the family wasn't exactly prejudiced."

It would be cool if they did, though. I'm sure I've read a few Indian folk tales. But probably people would get wild hairs up their butt over some technicality or another.
You know, you could be as generic as generic can get, and someone would still find something wrong with it.

Whoa... Logical-Error Detector beeping...
You get any African in ya, you're still descended from an African, and likely as not you can trace back your ancestry to some tribe or another. Everything that factors into the African ancestor factors into you. _________________

That's true. But maybe for whatever reason, the guy couldn't trace back that branch of the family tree. Maybe the European blood was that much overpowering.
There's other nationalities that are black besides Africans. Now, I'm going to ask a really stupid question. Did they all originate from Africa? It seems highly likely, since slaves were taken from Africa.

The only way you couldn't trace it back is if all records were lost, but lost records or no, if you have African ancestry, you're descended from Africans, plain and simple. You can't make turquoise paint without mixing in yellow at some point, you know what I mean?
To answer your 'stupid' question... you may want to read this page.

I guess I worded it odd...
He was an African American (or at least he thought he was full African American), and wanted to see where the first of his lineage started ever. He assumed African, since he was black, so went on a quest to find the tribe where his family tree started. Basically, he figured he was black and nothing else. BUT, he came to find out that where his family "history" starts and the first in his family is actually European, not African. The African tribe, which he did find, came in waaay later and wasn't the first of his family like he thought. But, his first first ancestor was European even though he is African American. Over the years, the African part overshadowed it and made the European lineage look almost non-existant. |

I'm still wondering who the Caucasian Princess Fantasia is...
*surprised that this article didn't mention 'Sunflower,' the deleted centaurette in the Pastoral Symphony segment of Fantasia* |

Sorry for beinging this back up again, but it's relevant to this topic and I didn't want to start a new thread
Many fans of the traditional Disney Animated Musical features rejoiced at the news that Disney is finally getting into 2D Animation again with "The Frog Princess".
One of the many reasons for the excitement for people like me was that the key filmmaking team behind this project was gonnna be the same as "The Little Mermaid" which bought about the last "Golden Age" of Animation.
It just seemed right and poetic, if u will...That once again the Directing team of Ron Clements & John Musker along with the amazing composer, Alan Menken would bring about this re-birth of the Classic Disney Musical. Cause these storytellers and Alan's music played a very important part in the success of all those disney musicals Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty & The Beast etc.
However, the news just broke this week that the new Animation head honcho and disney, John Lasseter (of Pixar), has decided to replace Alan Menken with Randy Newman and give him his Musical debut Randy Newman is no stranger to Pixar, he has been a staple composer for most of their movies and specially all of John's movies (Both the Toy Storys,Bug's Life, Cars).
This sent many Alan Menken fans into a fit of anger (including myself) with people already predicting Frog Princess to be doomed and the saying how John L. is gonna turn Disney into Pixar 2!
But on further discussion with a friend in Animation (who was equally disappointed with the switch),it led to him doing some investigations.
Which in turn led to quite an interesting discovery which might explain this move.
It SEEMS, The Frog Princess could be Disney's first African American princess, in a New Orleans-ish setting with a Jazz soundtrack and not a very theatrical soundtrack!
And that might explain the preference of Randy Newman over Alan Menken.
...I am deathly afraid for Ron and John right now . I love the resolution to not exactly using an "African" country setting (since, you know, they're still catching hell for the last ethnic movie they did like that *points to this place* ), but I bet you dollar bills people will fuss over the New Orleans thing. BET YOU. Come on, who wants to take bets? |

I just finished rereading Terry Pratchett's "Witches Abroad", which among other things has a Cinderella story with a half-black/half-white heroine set in a fantasy city heavily based on New Orleans. There's nothing new under the sun. _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can! After all... you do bear the name of a flower." -- Arbutus |

Yeeeeeaaaah, I'd consider it a strong possibility we'll get a few fussers. Still, it's possible that it'll be long enough by the time the movie actually does come out that the people doing the fussing won't be too numerous. _________________

Come into this late, so I've skipped a number of details. Pardon.
There'll probably be a few complainers, but by the time it comes out the sensitivity about anything New Orleans may die down. Me, personally, I think they're going to be using the "idealized" New Orleans, as in an idea of New Orleans -- voodoo, Mardi Gras atmosphere, its form of nobility and class, Jazz of course -- which isn't too different from what other filmmakers have done. They're going for the feel of the city as a cultural icon, and that can give you a lot of material to play with.
Now, to go read the rest of this thread. |

It's not exactly the ideals I'm afraid they might use like the music, and culture, and whatnot, but more so how "African" they're going to make it with it being loosely based off New Orleans if that makes any sense. It's a pretty African American set town as it is...or was now, but as history has proven, people will take the current example and compare it to whatever you come up with no matter what time period it's in, and harp on you if it's not the same/a true depiction. Not to mention someone will probably fuss and say they're using New Orleans as a loose setting because of the hurricane and they're trying to cash in on it, and because that's where a great concentration of Africans are, so that's why they used New Orleans and blah. I just know it. |
