@Lisa Jane: LOL whut? It’s really jarring to be reading a fic with an archaic setting like Aladdin and the writer throws in something out of place like nightclubs. It's also pretty bad when you can't read fics for a certain pairings/characters/etc. or even in your own fandom because the majority of them are awful. |
All I can provide is this link http://www.fanfiction.net/u/699093/jafarjasmineforever2005 (stories 37 and 38 in particular) and http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1677008/JasmineJafarWorld666 (story 3... the fact that it's called 80s Night says it all).

Maybe your old style of writing is more accessible to them?
Yeah, some reviewers are beyond annoying. Sorry you had to deal with that. I'm not trying to dictate how anyone reviews, but there are just some things that you don't say to an author. You sure as heck don't try to dictate how their idea plays out. |
That's a good point, though I'm sure it's riddled with errors. I've actually just crawled through my reviews and these are the three worst reviews I've gotten on dictating how my stories should play out - I won't even mention the private messages I've gotten. These reviews aren't all from the same story:
Why do you hate Aladdin so much? He is only a character with flaws. He is not bad or weak. And Jafar is a nutcase, and he will pay for his crimes. Basic thing is Aladdin is cool.
YOU MADE HER DIE? WHAT THE HECK WERE THINKING? I didn't like the end. You should make a different ending and post it.
The above review has me laughing every time I read it. The following review I don't find so bad, except for the last part when it goes on about 'World of Warcraft', not that it means much to me because I've never played the game, but I'm actually being told that I cannot write stories in which I turn the villain into a somewhat 'good' guy, and vice versa...
NOOOOOOO! Great story, but the ending is disappointing! I was so hoping that she and Aladdin would get back together, by means of Jafar doing something horrible or something. I also kind of wanted to see more of Genie, Abu and Carpit, but the story is still fantastic, aside from the ending. I'm glad you're striving to be unique and have a "villian-happy ending" as you called it, but nonetheless, I felt so sad and disappointed for Aladdin, and disappointed in Jasmine. I do, however, liked how you added a backstory on Jafar, as unlike his character may be.I LOVED the story, but as a future reference, don't make them like "World of Warcraft" (or so I've heard) where you feel bad for the bad guy (Aladdin in this story) and hate the "good guy" (Jafar). Thanks for the story, though!
What really irritates me about these reviews is being told what I should write. Do I complain about the hundreds of Jafar/Jasmine fanfiction I've read in which it all suddenly turns around in the last chapter and she kills him or runs away or something? No. I wrote my own story because I figured that if I didn't want that ending, then there were probably others out there who didn't want it either.
Haha awesome!

Thank you. XD Wow, I had no idea that Jafar/Jasmine was so popular. To be honest, personally it's not really my thing, but I don't try to play fandom cop and tell people what pairings to write. I like that you respect the basic tenets of writing.
46 chapters and sequel? I'm in the middle of doing an epic story (non-Aladdin) of my own right now. Writing it has made me develop a lot of respect for people who write really long fics and stick with them. |
The 46 chapters is covering both the original and sequel, I'm in the middle of chapter eighteen of the sequel right now, I think there's about another ten chapters to go. It never meant to be this long and it's taken nearly two years to write, but I'm kind of all over the place with updates. |

I suppose I just expect too from these people much then? I mean, if you're (hypothetical “you” of course) 16 years old but you write like someone much younger than that, then I honestly question your schooling. I’m sorry, I know that sounds mean and stuck-up, but I do. I'm not an expert at grammar, and God knows I’m not some uber-writer or anything, but if you constantly mix-up “their” and “they're”, well... And these writers who are in their 30s or even older who carry on and write like highschoolers.... yikes.

I used to believe it was better if poor writers didn't post their stuff online, but now I think it's a good thing. I think it really helps young writers out to practice, practice, practice. Even if it means putting themselves out there. Their writing will get better as they get older, but it won't get any better if they don't start |
*nods* Oh I agree to an extent -- there are people out there who used to write terribly, but improved with time and practice (I used to be one of those people lol, though I will say I’ve never done any of the things I’ve against in this thread). But there are some people who I think will never get better no matter how hard they practice. It's like how some pple just take a certain hobby like dance and are good at it, and people who no amount of practice will ever help (again, that has happened to me ).
I don't object to bad/or young authors posting their work online, but I won't read or comment on it, especially if they're the sorts to cop an attitude at anyone who says anything remotely negative about their work, even if it’s polite criticism (which unfortunately seems to be way too many). IMO, hopefully they'll lose interest in writing altogether.

I will agree with this. XD I don't personally read PWP, but better they do it with some fictional chars then get themselves knocked up by accident or whatever.
I hope I haven’t stepped on any toes with my comments. That was totally not my intention.

I really hate when people don't keep the characters 'in character'. I tend to only write Jafar/Jasmine which means I tend to read it, and there's a lot of bad stories... I cannot stand the stories where, for some reason, in the middle of Agrabah, the characters go to a nightclub and they 'get it on' on the dancefloor or something ridiculous.
I'm actually thinking of a couple of authors right now that I wouldn't touch their stories about the above pairing with a ten foot pole.
Also not a fan of stories that's just sex for sex's sake. Occasionally I'll read one but I prefer an actual plot... with it.
I do have a story on fanfiction.net that I wrote about ten years ago which is absolutely horrible by my own standards, yet still seems to be a drawcard by people visiting my stories... I've no idea why, it really is shocking.
I also hate some reviews... not because they're bad, or because they're flaming, but because of ones like 'Why didn't you put Jasmine with Aladdin at the end and have them live happily ever after?'... because I didn't want to. In my eyes, if they wanted to read that, there's another million other stories they could've read instead of mine.

I've read a well written story on fanfiction.net once that I really enjoyed. Then I found out later that the fic was written by one of the Aladdin Central members. It figures, right?

|
I love this forum (even reading the ancient threads are a blast =D) and really need to start posting here again. So I thought this would be a interesting topic. There are several already like it for Aladdin fics, so why not one for Disney in general?
I've seen some wonderful, creative fanfics based around assorted Disney shows and films, but that seems far and few between, especially these days. Not to be catty or a downer, but the vast majority of the stuff I see on Fanfiction.net is... well, not very good.
- Character bashing. Off the top of my head, the princesses get it the worst, I think. Though I’ve seen rival animation companies be targeted as well. I'm just really tired of seeing people lay into Cinderella/Snow White/Ariel/Aurora and depicting them as stupid, itchy, whiny, etc. Maybe this is just me, but isn't fanfiction for celebrating the things we like about the fandom, not what we hate?
- Trying to make everything dark and edgy. I guess it's because of Disney's association with happiness and innocence that makes people want to go the opposite direction and make their stories and things dark? Now, I don't mind some darkness, especially in certain series like "Gargoyles", but the way its handle tends to be too over-the-top for my tastes, like the writer is trying way too hard.
I'm not going to even touch the Mary Sues, all the "kid gets sucked into the world of Disney characters" stories, the bad characterization, the massive amounts of creepiness that tends to lurk in the fandoms for animal-based shows/films, and other badness. Am I just looking in the wrong places? Can anyone rec me anything readable? I like a lot of characters that many people either hate or totally forget about (Cinderella, Dr. Doppler, Prince Eric, Chief, etc.), so I’m sure that’s another reason why I have trouble finding anything to my tastes. |
