Oh, Fanfiction.net. A huge wonderful archive of any fanfiction you can imagine...romance, frendship, sci-fi, AUs, and...BADFICS.

I'm been seeing some quality works here that aren't on FFn...and trust me, that place NEEDS quality. The plotless crap I spew out would be brilliant compared to most of the Sue-fics on there if I posted anything...

It needs quantaty too--Aladdin isn't the smallest achive of all, but it's certainally down there.

At my humble request, post things there. Even self-inserts, which I usually loathe, would be great so long as you don't stray into Suedom.

-falls dramatically to knees- PLEASE! PLEASE!

I know what you mean! I post stuff there! I'm "Oh Sweet Solace."

My story "Diadem" is unfinished, but I have one or two finished stories there! "Stealing the Stories" is my most popular fic.

I sooooooooooooooo agree with this post. 90% of it is...I don't even know, "junk" isn't a good enough word. I wish I knew how to write. I draw, but don't show anyone anything. Then again, if I knew how to write, I would probably just write for myself and not show those either Laughing

Buuuut, I just read a nice fic a little while ago that didn't make me close the page within two paragraphs:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5803036/1/Those_Moments

I typically don't like stories about Aladdin and Jasmine's children (it's always the names of them that get me), but this was cute and well-written. They even got Genie's transformations in there without it being awkward.

Yeah I wrote one of those way back when, but I took it down when I got older because I realized it was awful.

I wish I hadn't completely deleted it though. I would like to be able to read it again today to see if anything in it was worth saving. It was up back before the library existed, and we had to email Calluna our stories.

I'll check out that fic you posted too!

I'm really bad at getting rid of stuff I don't like (like...balling it up and throwing it away), but I'm just now getting into the habit of keeping a few things because I can come back in a few years later and fix it.

Self-plugs, then:

Genfic about Genie: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4100548/1/The_Man_Who_Freed_Me

Suspense/romance fic currently under revision, Mozenrath/Jasmine (don't know what your tastes are but some are turned off by this pairing):
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3488835/1/Antiphony

Romance/tragedy one-shot from Aladdin's POV, pre-movie:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4780635/1/Sunset

Angst/tragedy with experimental style from Jasmine's POV - not really a M/J pairing, it's more like A/J under stress...
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4503545/1/Chrysolite

Plugs for others:

Hilarious fic on Al and Razoul having a drinking contest:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3900779/1/A_Drinking_Contest

Another hilarious fic, this time a romantic comedy, Mozenrath/Sadira:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2439921/1/alls_fair_in_love_and_sorcery

One-shot character study on Ayam Aghoul:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4299091/1/Ayam_What_Ayam

Adventure/angst fic set 6 years after the series:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1240961/1/Gone

Sad/heartfelt one-shot from Jafar's POV as a jinni:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2379067/1/I_See

AU where Mozenrath and Aladdin grew up in each other's shoes:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2622982/1/The_Poles_Reversed

And perhaps the best fic I have read for Aladdin anywhere, but not on ffnet: a Genie-centric one-shot.

Those are all good, if some depressing.

It's pretty sad that those are the only quality fics there out of over a thousand...

I didn't see it there. :/ Unless Calluna kept them somehow, I think it's gone forever.

And Cantare, thanks for posting that list! Next time I'm on a fanfic spree, I'll be sure to check those out!

I'm going to self-plug... though I warn, I only write Jasmine/Jafar, and this isn't going to change, despite the long, long, long message I received on FanFiction.Net from someone who complained that 'how dare I' write about Aladdin in a negative light.

Rolling Eyes

Other than that one person, people seem to like my Jasmine/Jafar stories, with the number one reason being is that I keep (or try) everyone in character.

I would read these two, one finished and one currently being written (and taking it's own sweet time to be written, too, but will be finished one day). I warn that the first story is 29 chapters and 75K something words... and then the second story picks up where the first one left off. There are some others I've written under my name (lisajane), though I wouldn't touch the earliest Aladdin one I wrote, I can't bring myself to read it and the only reason why it's still even on the site is because of the stupidly high amount of hits it gets each month, for reasons I would never understand. I started posting it on this website, but never got around to posting all the chapters:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5152154/1/An_Agreements_Small_Print

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5541349/1/The_Small_Prints_Limitations

As a general rule though, I can't stand most of the junk that tumbles into the Aladdin section on FanFiction.Net. And then ones that capture my interest, go so terribly wrong by the end.

No problem for the recs!
Meesh, I hope you have your next fanfic spree soon and read the Genie one at the end ("Whole New World") first, because it's just too awesome to ignore. I could read it again right now and still feel moved by it.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention a fic called The Necromancer's Daughter by Lynn Osburn (she's known for her Aladdin/Mozenrath yaoi but this story doesn't fall in that category). It's about the son of Aladdin and Jasmine and the daughter of Mozenrath getting engaged for political reasons...quite an interesting premise and the OCs genuinely shine. One of the few "next generation" fics that I like.

I'll take this chance to recommend this fic because it's simply amazingly funny and feels so much like the series. It's about Saleen and Mechanikles teaming up, though not through free will on his part. It's one of the best fics I've read in a long time.

I wish I had the energy to finish my Runtar fic. I only have one chapter more to write, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Then again, I'm probably the only person in the world who likes Runtar, so it's not like I'm depriving the world of anything. And then I have that unfinished Mozenrath/Rasoul fic that I started for that pairing challenge here, though I try to forget about that one. Laughing

I wholeheartedly agree with the rec for Steam. Can't believe I forgot that one. Saleen and Mechanikles are an awesome combo. And the author has a knack for combining words and phrases in the most delicious ways.

I wrote "Those Moments". Wow. I'm really thrilled that it's been recc'd here and I'm glad to know that you enjoyed it! Very Happy (In other words, thanks for the rec! Very Happy) I definitely try my best to create well written/high quality fanfics for the fandoms that I love. I am curious, though, how have other authors made Genie's transformations seem awkward? It's a relief to know that you didn't think I was guilty of that. Wink

As for a fic rec of my own, I read "Do You Trust Me" the other day. It was a pretty good read. Smile

Oh, you're welcome! Very Happy

It's so hard to explain. There's just something weird about how people write the transformations that kind of pulls you out of the story too long for something that isn't really that important to the fic as a whole. It's just a joke that's suppose to be based off some visual pun or a moment for him to exaggerate the situation, but I feel like too much time is spent on them explaining the joke before I even get a chance to get it and it's just awkward. But then with something like this in your fic:

"A child who misbehaves," Genie supplied, "but you won't be one for long!" A fancy black suit appeared on his chest. "Mademoiselle Adeela, can I entice you with ze night's special? Eet's baklava. Per'aps you 'ave 'ad it, no?"

I got what was going on without you having to go into this long paragraph about the details of what he was wearing, what changed on his face maybe, that his voice was in an accent, etc. I got what was going on without it having to be spelled out for me. Even if we have two different images of what he was wearing exactly, it doesn't matter because I know he turned into something reminiscent of a French waiter and that's the joke. I got it and moved on. If it's not absolutely crucial to understand for the joke (like a pop culture reference), I don't need to spend forever on it.

And sometimes the transformations are completely ignored for lack of knowing how to add them in, which I understand, but this is Genie we're talking about Laughing. I get a lot of his funny is based on visual aid so it doesn't always translate too well in fanfic, but it's just as weird for him to not change into something as it is for him to be constantly changing into stuff to the point where he becomes annoying and kind of OOC. The same goes for his lines. Not everything he says is funny. He actually, you know, talks.

/soap box, sorry Laughing

You explained your thoughts well. Smile I understood what you meant, and I agree. I guess when it comes to describing Genie's transformations I've never felt the need to write a paragraph long description of his appearance. That idea has never even occurred to me (and this is only the second time I've written him). I think I figure in the back of my mind that it isn't necessary to "over describe" or "over explain" because it would detract from the focus of the piece. That type of lengthy description is pointless and I hate reading it in Aladdin fanfics.

I tend to reserve paragraph long descriptions for the explanation of a character's emotions or a setting, not what a character is wearing or their overall physical appearance. I don't want to be labeled as a"Novice Fanfiction Writer", y'know? Besides, I'm not one, so... Wink

Exactly. I tried my best to depict that as well. Genie's an endearing goofball, so I played up that side of his personality, but then I realized that it'd be a good idea to throw in some serious dialogue as well. Genie has to be calm sometimes. There needs to be balance in his personality, which is what we see in the Aladdin films and series.

I was worried that I made Genie transform too frequently in "Those Moments", but I think I'm fine since I spread the scenes out and placed scenes where the other characters were talking and interacting in between each of them. It's not like I had Genie and his goofiness dominate the fic.

Oh! And what odd names do other writers select for Jas and Al's kids? I tried to put a lot of thought into that one, too. -nods- Smile (I'm the queen of putting thought into things. It'll be the death of me. Razz)
