Academy and Grammy Award-winning songwriter Alan Menken is among the 2008 inductees to the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Menken, who is currently represented on Broadway with Disney's The Little Mermaid, will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at the 39th annual awards dinner, which will be held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City June 19.
An alumnus of the BMI Lehman Engle Musical Theatre Workshop, Menken has earned eight Academy Awards, ten Grammys and seven Golden Globes. He will be honored alongside songwriters Desmond Child, Albert Hammond, Loretta Lynn and John Sebastian.
Menken's Academy Award-winning compositions include "Under the Sea" from Disney's "The Little Mermaid," "A Whole New World" from "Aladdin," the title song from "Beauty and the Beast" and "Colors of the Wind" from "Pocahontas." His screen musicals also include "Newsies," "Hercules," "Enchanted" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" – which was later adapted for the stage.
Menken also composed the oft-produced musical Little Shop of Horrors, as well as Weird Romance, A Christmas Carol, Sister Act: The Musical, and the ambitious oratorio King David.
Founded by Johnny Mercer, Abe Olman and Howie Richmond in 1969, the Songwriters Hall of Fame celebrates songwriters, educates the public with regard to their achievements, and produces a spectrum of professional programs devoted to the development of new songwriting talent through workshops, showcases and scholarships.
Previous inductees include Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Cy Coleman, Richard and Robert Sherman, Burt Bacharach, Carole King, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Sir Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Brian Wilson and James Taylor. |

I just realized... there's a name conspicuously absent from that list of previous winners. I checked their website, and, sure enough, Howard Ashman was never inducted. _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can! After all... you do bear the name of a flower." -- Arbutus |

Congratulations to Alan Menken, well deserved (and IMHO long overdue).
I do agree with Calluna though, it would be nice if Howard Ashman was inducted as well. |
