Not sure if anyone else saw, but Eric Goldberg (Genie's head animator) had a letter in this week's Time:

What's a CGI character? I thought that Genie was hand drawn. _________________ "I too am a member of your species, Captain, or I was. Perhaps I am not anymore. Perhaps you are right in thinking of me as an alien. I know I am different from you. You see-I do not kill." |

Of course it wouldn't be right. I really can't see Genie like that. I hate those computer movies like toy story and all that. I like the animated ones better. _________________ "I too am a member of your species, Captain, or I was. Perhaps I am not anymore. Perhaps you are right in thinking of me as an alien. Uh... CGI would be Carpet/The Cave of Wonders if you needed Aladdin references. They are characters/things animated on a computer instead of hand-drawn. |
No, no. Carpet's design is CGI; he himself is hand drawn
As for Genie being CGI, it wouldn't be the first time. They did it for the Disneyland commercial last year along with Iago. As long as they don't go around having him along with everyone else CGI ALL the time, then I can live. |

Also, The Cave of Wonders head was CGI, but Eric provided 2D references for it.
As some might suggest, the one can not live without the other. 2D animators cannot go without knowing 3D and vice versa. _________________

I think that's the CGI Genie that he was talking about. _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can! After all... you do bear the name of a flower." -- Arbutus |

Oh, see I thought he was talking about that Genie he made for that exhibit in Disneyland in Tokyo (or somewhere over there) and then the 3-D characters in the commercial in general. Him talking about both would make more sense, though |

Okay, yes, I knew that Carpet was hand-drawn for a good part of his animation. I just knew that it was a big deal to have a CGI character in an animated movie, especially since he fit in so well.
And I did see Genie as CGI... and I did not like it AT ALL. Animated Genie all the way. _________________ MysticMeg's Stories on THE LIBRARY OF AGRABAH!!!

Yeah, but Carpet is not a CGI character . The CoW is, but the only thing CGI on Carpet is his design. He's still a 2-D character; those lines we see are not created on the computer.
But this is also why if they did make Carpet completely CGI, you really cannot tell unless you look at the tassels, or have a tassel fetish . |

ALRIGHT, he's not a CGI character, but he does have CGI elements in him. That was my point. Wasn't it a first in animation? The CoW was CGI, but still, he's not as widely-talked about as Carpet is for his animation. _________________ MysticMeg's Stories on THE LIBRARY OF AGRABAH!!!

Yes I believe Carpet was the first use of CGI combined with handdrawn animation. Before the crews only used it for backgrounds like the ballroom in Beauty or the inside of Big Ben in Basil. |

I'm quite certain the tassels were hand-drawn. The only part of Carpet that was CGI was the pattern - this being because all that detail would have been much, much, much too darned difficult to do by hand. _________________

I am too. I was using that as an example of IF they made Carpet CGI since the only real difference/way to tell would be the tassels, and if you are really good, the outline himself. |
